In theΒ ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants)Β framework,Β FA (Financial Accounting)β€”also known as F3β€”focuses on the preparation of financial records and statements for both single entities and basic groups.Β 

ACCA F/FA Syllabus Overview

The curriculum is divided into seven main areas:Β 

  • The Context & Purpose of Financial Reporting:Β Understanding theΒ regulatory framework, the role of the IASB, and the qualitative characteristics of financial information.
  • Qualitative Characteristics of Financial Information:Β Identifying relevance, faithful representation, and enhancing characteristics.
  • Double-Entry Bookkeeping:Β Mastering ledger accounts, journals, and theΒ accounting equation.
  • Recording Transactions & Events:Β Accounting forΒ sales, purchases, cash, inventory (IAS 2), non-current assets (IAS 16), accruals, prepayments, and provisions.
  • Preparing a Trial Balance:Β Correcting errors, performing bank reconciliations, and managing control accounts.
  • Preparing Basic Financial Statements:Β Constructing a Statement of Profit or Loss, Statement of Financial Position, and Statement of Cash Flows forΒ sole traders and limited companies.
  • Consolidated Financial Statements:Β Basic preparation of group accounts (subsidiaries and associates) excluding complex group structures.Β 

Key Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, candidates should be able to:

  1. ExplainΒ the context and purpose of financial reporting.
  2. DefineΒ and apply the qualitative characteristics of financial information.
  3. RecordΒ transactions accurately using double-entry bookkeeping.
  4. PrepareΒ a trial balance and correct bookkeeping errors.
  5. DraftΒ financial statements for single entities and simple groups.
  6. InterpretΒ financial statements using basicΒ ratio analysis.Β 

Exam Format

  • Type:Β 2-hour computer-based exam (CBE).
  • Section A:Β 35 objective test questions (2 marks each).
  • Section B:Β 2 multi-task questions (15 marks each) focusing onΒ Financial Statement PreparationΒ andΒ Group Accounting/Cash Flows.
  • Pass Mark:Β 50%.
